Overview
OLIF is a surgery designed to correct problems caused by degenerated discs in your spine. This procedure creates more space for nerves and is performed through small openings on either side of the body, making it an excellent option compared to other back surgeries.
Preparation
OLIF surgery is performed under general anesthesia using a video x-ray device called a fluoroscope. A small incision is made in your skin, through which tubes containing dilators are passed through soft tissues to reach the affected area. The retraction process begins with an instrument that gently slides over the weakened areas, creating enough space for new tissue to grow across both sides without obstruction or pressure buildup in any particular area.
Removing The Disc
Your surgeon will carefully remove the disc causing you pain. An implant called an “interbody device” is placed between your vertebrae to relieve compression on nearby nerves and muscles, while also restoring the spaces to their proper positions.
Stabilizing The Spine
Once the procedure is complete, your surgeon will carefully close any open wounds to ensure a comfortable recovery. You’ll be closely monitored as you wake up and will be given instructions on how to best facilitate healing at home
