Get to Know Intracept®

Here’s a quick look at how Intracept® works, and why it’s different

1. Identifying the pain source
Conventional wisdom suggests that most lower back pain originates from the discs located between spinal vertebrae. But in many cases, the pain is actually originating from the vertebral endplates. An MRI is necessary to make this distinction.
2. Assessing the damage
Pain from the vertebral endplates is known as vertebrogenic pain, and it is transmitted through the basivertebral nerve (BVN). The BVN runs through multiple vertebra, and your MRI will reveal which endplates are damaged.
3. Accessing the nerve
To reach and treat the BVN at the site of the damaged endplates, your Intracept® provider will make a small incision in the lower back (3-5mm) and guide a specialized probe into the vertebrae.
4. Stopping the pain signals
Radiofrequency energy, or heat, is then used to the disable the BVN, rendering it unable to transmit pain signals. This process is repeated within any other areas of damage.
5. Leaving back pain behind you
Some patients report feeling relief immediately afterward. Most patients are able to resume regular activities within a short amount of time.
6. Intracept® may be the solution you’ve been waiting for.
Clinical studies have proven that the Intracept® Procedure provides lasting pain relief and lessens dependence on pain medication. For more about these studies,

The Process

At Spine Team Texas, our goal is to help you get back to the pain-free life you desire as quickly as possible, and we’re here to help provide the care resources you need at every step along your journey, from start to finish.
1. Evaluation
The process starts with a brief evaluation with an Intracept®-trained specialist who will review your MRI results, assess your condition and discuss your candidacy for the Intracept® procedure, as well as other, non-surgical treatment options.
2. Imaging
If you have not had an MRI prior to your initial evaluation, we will prescribe the exam and refer you to a diagnostic testing center. You or your MRI provider can send us the results digitally – another in-person appointment isn’t necessary.
3. Procedure
The Intracept® procedure generally takes less than an hour and does not require an overnight hospital stay. You will be under full anesthesia, so although you’ll be able to walk out following the procedure, you will need someone to drive you home.
4. Physical Therapy
In most cases, providers typically prescribe Intracept® patients between 4-8 sessions with one of our trained physical therapists, to help ensure that you are ready to resume your normal physical activities.
5. Leaving back pain behind you
Some patients report feeling relief immediately afterward. Most patients are able to resume regular activities within a short amount of time.

Find out if Intracept is right for you.

Fill out the form below and a member of our team will contact you to discuss your candidacy for the Intracept procedure and schedule an initial evaluation. Alternatively, if you meet the initial criteria described above, you may also call our office at 817-442-9300 to schedule an evaluation.
