The treatment of people with pain-related conditions is a deeply personal endeavor. Stemming from experiences in his formative years, Dr. Berg went into medicine with the intent to treat those with acute and chronic pain. Dr. Berg has been with Spine Team Texas since 2009 and is a managing partner focusing on the evaluation and treatment of spine-related conditions.
Raised in East Texas, he went to Texas A&M University in College Station for his undergraduate degree and then stayed for Medical School, where he attended on a full scholarship. He then continued his training at the University of Iowa for his anesthesiology residency, learning not only traditional anesthetic techniques but also the emerging field of regional anesthesia. This prepared him for fellowship training in the interventional treatment of spinal conditions at the Wake Forest School of Medicine – Carolinas Pain Institute in Winston-Salem, NC.
In clinical practice, Dr. Berg evaluates spinal conditions using history and examination in conjunction with the interpretation of studies such as MRI, X-Ray, EMG and CT Myelography. Treatment options may include reassurance, physical therapy, interventional injection techniques, rhizotomy/radiofrequency ablations, spinal cord stimulation as well as referrals for surgery if indicated. Guidance can be given in the most straightforward to complex cases.
Dr. Berg has a special interest in complex spinal cord stimulation (SCS). Spinal cord stimulation is typically used in cases where traditional options (physical therapy, injections, medications, surgery) have not been successful or the patient is not a candidate for more invasive techniques. As a principal investigator on SCS research protocols, his research is presented and published frequently at the national and international level, advancing the field of neuromodulation. As a thought leader in neuromodulation, he is called on often to teach the newest techniques in trialing, implanting, and programming. As SCS has improved over time, more people are now candidates, and greater success has been demonstrated, leading more patients back to living independent lives with less reliance on pain medication and procedures.
In addition to his clinical duties he performs the following roles in the local medical community:
