Newfound Balance
After graduating from the University of North Texas, Jennifer Taylor, Director of ASC Services at Spine Team Texas, attended nursing school and proceeded to work in a hospital environment. Working endless shifts as a hospital nurse left Taylor overwhelmed and unsatisfied. Being forced to ration time with friends, family, and responsibilities at home led Taylor to pursue a profession that was considerate of her personal life.
As of today, Taylor has been with Spine Team Texas for over 11 years. It didn’t take long for her to appreciate the structure of Spine Team Texas’s approach to job satisfaction. Her newfound work-life balance allowed Taylor to dedicate more time to her family.
An active family of four, the Taylors once had to efficiently ration their time away from work. Reflecting on her career before joining Spine Team Texas, Taylor often pondered, “What is a holiday?”
With a new lease on her career, Jennifer Taylor was now allotted the time with her family she always deserved. Parenting is considered by many a career in and of itself. Being overwhelmed with strenuous tasks at work only complicates handling responsibilities at home. As her family matured and grew interested in extracurricular activities, Taylor became more aware of the detrimental effect her professional life had on her family.
As her family gathered around the TV to watch the 2010 Winter Olympics, Taylor noticed both her daughter and son’s attention gravitate towards the screen. They watched in admiration as world-class athletes effortlessly skated over the ice in their distinguished uniforms. Soon after watching the U.S. take gold at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, both her children grew interested in winter sports. Taylor’s son began playing ice hockey in 2012 and her daughter began figure skating in 2013. Fast forward almost a decade, Taylor’s daughter remains a member of the Dallas Figure Skating Club and the United States Figure Skating Association, a thrilling journey Jennifer Taylor can be proud of her contribution to. From ice skating events to ice hockey exhibitions, Taylor facilitated it all.
Taylor quickly learned the value of a healthy work-life balance. In addition to guaranteed paid time off, Taylor, like all Spine Team Texas employees, enjoys eight paid holidays and work-free nights and weekends. As their children mature and set their sights on independent life, the Taylors now have time to explore experiences and interests of their own such as traveling the Colorado ski country and western wine country. Taylor attributes the adventurous nature of her personal life to the liberties granted in her professional life.

Finding your Work/Life Balance
Finding your desired work life balance may be difficult in a professional world left permanently revolutionized by a global pandemic. For many, a workday now means being prepared to manage tasks at any hour of the day. As companies continue to recover from the economic consequences of COVID-19, many employees are being asked to overcompensate to make up for lost ground. A recent Harvard Business School survey found that 94% of working professionals reported working more than 50 hours per week and nearly half said they worked more than 65 hours per week. Constant demands placed on employees prove to be overwhelming and unsustainable. Many employers are failing to meet fundamental expectations of applicants and it’s becoming evident. According to a 2023 Pew Research Center survey, only 51% of Americans are satisfied with their job. Is your personal life diminished by overwhelming responsibility at work? Here’s four tips that will help you optimize your free time.
-
Optimize the structure of your life
If your workday is plagued with overwhelming stress, it’s important to reevaluate your schedule. While productivity in the workplace is important, many employees become more productive with a satisfactory work-life balance. Improving your mental and physical health allows you to complete tasks more efficiently with more motivation. The first step in improving your mental and physical health is identifying trends in lack of motivation and poor mood. Are you spending too much time at your desk and becoming sedentary? Make time in your schedule to get active. Are your responsibilities at work overflowing into your personal time? Set limits and timeframes dedicated to managing work-related responsibilities.
-
Value Your Health
Many healthcare employers fail to meet basic expectations held by their employees. This demanding approach diminishes employee satisfaction and the quality of care provided for patients. Above all, your physical and mental health must be prioritized and respected in your workplace. Mental stress and physically straining tasks required in the workplace are shortcuts to becoming an unsatisfied employee. Value your health and ask yourself if your employer is granting you the balance you need to protect your happiness.
-
Set Expectations
According to Statista, 72% of people looking for a job believe that work-life balance is an important factor to consider. While there is no ‘perfect’ work-life balance, it is important to determine a balance that best fits you before finding an employer that allows you to maintain it.
-
Reserve time for yourself and those close to you
Regardless of your job title or the extent of your responsibilities, your job shouldn’t consume your entire life. It’s important to make yourself available to those who are important to you. Whether it’s taking a family vacation or a personal day off, make time for yourself and those closest to you.
