What is Occipital Neuralgia?

Occipital neuralgia is a form of headache caused by irritated or inflamed nerves at the base of the skull. It often results in sharp, piercing pain in the back of the head or upper neck.

Common Causes

  • Tension in neck muscles

Symptoms

  • Sharp, throbbing pain at the base of the head and behind the eyes
  • Sensitivity to light

Diagnosis

  • Physical examination
  • Patient history
  • Possibly nerve block injections to confirm the source of the pain

  • Massage
  • Physical therapy
  • Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication
