The thought of an injection can be scary but inside our state-of-the-art injection suites equipped with the most advanced technology, Spine Team Texas can help directly target the source of pain and deliver effective medication to help you achieve your pain relief goals.
Injections can also be a powerful diagnostic tool that provides helpful clues to the possible causes of neck and back pain.
Spine Team Texas employs five different injection methods to get the best results and target pain in the specific area. All of these injections are guided with X-rays and contrast dye so physicians ensure they are placing the medication in the correct area.
1. Cervical Epidural Steroid Injections
This type of injection relieves pain in the neck, shoulders, and arms caused by pinched nerves in the cervical spine. The medication injected helps decrease the swelling of nerves. The number of injections needed to provide pain relief varies on the patient.
2. Facet Joint Injections
This type of injection relieves pain in the facet joints, which are found on both sides of the spine. They can become irritated and inflamed and can be used to determine source of pain.
The medication injected is a mixture of a soothing, numbing anesthetic and an anti-inflammatory steroid medication. Multiple facet joints can be treated at a time.
Back pain may disappear immediately after successful injections due to the anesthetic. As the anesthetic wears off, the steroid will take effect in the days after the injection.
The duration of time the steroid will reduce inflammation and pain and provide relief varies based on the patient. Up to three injections of this type may be given per year.
3. Lumbar Epidural Steroid Injections
This type of injection relieves low back and radiating leg pain using steroid medication to reduce the swelling and inflammation caused by spinal conditions.
A steroid-anesthetics mixture bathes the painful nerve root with soothing medication. Many patients get significant relief from only one or two injections, but it may be necessary to repeat the procedure as many as three times to get the full benefit of the medication.
4. Lumbar Transforaminal Epidural Steroid Injections
This type of injection reduces swelling and inflammation of irritated spinal nerves in the lower back and pain that radiates from the back to the legs.
A steroid-anesthetic medication will help alleviate pain, and patients may feel signification relief after one injection. Some patients may need multiple injections before feeling the full benefit of the medication.
5. Sacroiliac Joint Steroid Injection
This type of injection relieves pain caused by arthritis in the sacroiliac joint where the spine and hip meet. The steroid medication can reduce swelling and inflammation in the joint.
The steroid-anesthetics mix is injected into the sacroiliac joint, bathing the area in medication.
