What Is Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery?

Minimally invasive spine surgery aims to achieve the same goals as traditional surgery but with smaller incisions and faster recovery times. Our minimally invasive surgery techniques provide the opportunity to relieve your spine pain with little to no interruption to your day-to-day lifestyle. This treatment method involves making a small incision, as little as half an inch, and inserting specialized instruments or probes to access and repair the damaged area of the spine. This less aggressive approach actually lowers the risk of complications, as well as provides a shorter surgery duration, quicker recovery, and less visible scarring. Best of all, minimally invasive surgery has proven to be as successful as conventional “open surgery” methods.

Do I need Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery?

There are many factors that could make you a candidate for minimally invasive spine surgery, however, it’s ideal for patients with persistent back, neck, or leg pain who have not found relief from more conservative, nonsurgical methods, such as physical therapy, medications, and spinal injections. Conditions that could be treated with minimally invasive spine surgery include:

  • Herniated or Bulging Disc
  • Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Pinched Nerve
  • Sciatica
  • Spinal Stenosis

If you are suffering from any of these conditions and non-surgical treatments have failed to provide lasting relief, minimally invasive spine surgery may be able to help.

Am I a Candidate for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery?

For Spine Team Texas, surgery is a last resort. But if your neck or back pain has not responded to more conservative treatment, minimally invasive spine surgery may be the right treatment. Request an appointment with Spine Team Texas to determine your surgical and non-surgical options.

What Are the Most Common Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Procedures?

This injection procedure is performed to relieve pain caused by arthritis in the sacroiliac joint where the spine and hip bone meet. The steroid medication can reduce swelling and inflammation in the joint.

ALIF: Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion

ALIF is generally used to treat back or leg pain caused by degenerative disc disease. The surgeon will stabilize the spine by fusing vertebrae together with bone graft material.

Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF)

This surgery removes a herniated or degenerative vertebral disc in your neck and replaces it with a bone graft. This can relieve painful pressure on spinal nerves.

Artificial Cervical Disc Replacement

After years of therapy, the Spine Team Texas physical therapists are experts in rehabilitation and diagnostics. They blend hands on care with personalized movements to strengthen your back while improving flexibility for an effective treatment plan that will address pain symptoms so you can get back into life as quickly possible!

Cervical Posterior Foraminotomy

We know one of the biggest fears for back and neck pain sufferers is surgery. That’s why our physicians have a philosophy that they don’t want to consider operating unless it’s absolutely necessary, which makes them proficient in utilizing minimally invasive techniques so you can avoid any long-term consequences or side effects from an operation if possible.

Kyphoplasty

This minimally-invasive procedure repairs a vertebral compression fracture. It helps restore the spine’s natural shape. Some patients experience rapid pain relief after the procedure.

Laminectomy (Cervical) with Fusion

This procedure removes a section of bone from the rear of one or more vertebrae to relieve the painful and disabling pressure of stenosis. The spine is then stabilized with rods and screws.

Microendoscopic Discectomy

This minimally-invasive procedure is performed through a tubular device. It is designed to relieve pain caused by herniated discs pressing on nerve roots. This surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis, which allows the patient to leave the hospital the same day.

Minimally-Invasive Lumbar Microdecompression

This procedure removes a section of bone from the rear of one or more vertebrae to relieve the painful and disabling pressure of stenosis. The spine is then stabilized with rods and screws.

OLIF: Oblique Lumbar Interbody Fusion (for L2-L5)

This minimally invasive procedure is used to remove overgrown vertebral bone and soft tissue to relieve the compression of nerve roots in the lumbar spine. It is performed through a small incision on the abdomen.
